Why buy a space saver wheel

There are 4 types of replacements when you get a puncture.

  1. Repair kit - in new cars, but does not help if the tyre is punctured from the side
  2. Spare wheel - a full size wheel, heavy, big and often very worn
  3. Run-flat tyres - reinforced side cord, but they are very expensive tyres
  4. Space saver spare wheel - a special, lightweight and compact wheel, designed for commuting to the service

Spare wheels are not fitted to newly manufactured vehicles. This is due to the cost reduction, the weight of the car and the improved assistance options in every EU country. Having a space saver spare wheel in the car allows the driver to remain mobile in the event of a puncture or tyre tear while driving, saving the cost of towing to service.

LAW VERSUS SPACE SAVER SPARE WHEELS

Having a space saver or spare wheel is not required by law. However, if you use a spare wheel, it must be roadworthy. This means that the minimum tread depth must not be less than 1.6mm. You must not use a wheel with a summer tyre during the winter months.

SPACE-SAVING SPARE WHEEL SAVES SPACE IN THE TRUNK

Compared to the spare wheel, the space saver wheel reduces fuel consumption due to its weight and also significantly reduces storage space.

The normal spare wheel is replaced by a space-saver spare wheel. A lot of space has been created.

Advantages:

  • can be used for all types of tyre damage
  • saves space in the boot or spare wheel compartment compared to a conventional spare wheel
  • lower fuel consumption than a conventional spare wheel

With a spare wheel, they should not be driven faster than 80 km/h.

Disadvantages:

  • maximum speed is 80 km/h
  • use is limited because different sizes of range wheel and conventional tyres can damage the differential during prolonged use

ADHESIVE KIT FOR DEFECTS

Repair kits are another alternative to spare wheels. They contain a liquid tire sealant that is pumped into the tire with a compressor. Minor damage to the tread can be temporarily repaired. However, if you get a flat tire, don't notice, and then drive off, the adhesive kit won't help.

Advantages:

  • the kits are light and small, saving space
  • no additional fuel consumption due to its own weight

Disadvantages:

  • is only suitable for minor damage to the tread
  • limited range and speed (only suitable for a slow and careful drive to the nearest workshop)

RUN-FLAT TYRES

The classic spare wheel has competition. According to statistics, most drivers still rely on a full-size spare wheel. Basically, if you bring breakdown assistance - whatever kind it is - they need to know exactly how it works.

Advantages:

  • solves small holes and punctures

Disadvantages:

  • are significantly more expensive than conventional tyres
  • reduce driving comfort, they are harder than normal tyres
  • have lower ratings from both users and test drivers than conventional tyres
